Blog #3 I ride

I ride
I ride down that old trail
With the only one I trust
Her tail flying in the wind
We start to run faster
We feel the freedom of the wind
We begin to run
Every thing goes by in a blur
Who could ask for much more
But wait...
What's that up ahead
A sharp slippery turn
I yern for her to slow down
I yell for her to slow
She doesn't buy faster yet
The fear of what I know is about to happen bubbles in my chest
I wish she would take a rest
We hit that sharp curve
I feel her feet go out from under
And I hear a crack as we both came down
As she lay the motionless on top of my leg I fell her finally slow down
I dug my way out knowing we were broke
My shoulder hip knee crushed
But she needed to get up too
Her spirit crushed
She slowly gets up
We both lip on home no longer free
But stricken by pain we caused our selfs

Region

So the moment I chose isn't one that really impacted my life, but more so just one that is very interesting compared to the rest of my ventures. I pole vaulted on the track team my junior and senior and I went to the regional meet both years. The region meet determines who goes to the state meet. I went to state both years. This camera eye will be based off of my senior year at region.

where is cynthiana    why would a region track meet be here  empty farmland
will this wind affect my vaulting    yeah  oh well
it is way to early for this  I just want to sleep no stay focused it's going to be a long day  run run run run run run jump plant twist  okay just do that again    don't think just do  don't think just do  it's that easy right   why does my dad yell so loud   repitition  yeah that was a good vault just keep doing that   no worries    don't think just do
look for a friendly face     take your mind off of this   just don't worry  oh hey there
less people are going now   run run run run plant jump twist   cleared
how have I  lasted this long in the competition
look at my teammates run their events  4x100 4x200   that's pride
so it's just me and that other guy  no pressure I've done this before   breath inhale exhale GO run run run run run plant jump twist
you'd never think that you have coherent thoughts in midair while falling for that split second  I was freaking out  my arm had touch the standard  in my aerial stupor i was worrying about that bar falling and being eliminated         It didn't    I remained
 comfort had returned

as soon as I hit that mat i turned around to see that bar shake   but not fall   needless to say I was feeling good  my father was creating such a racket in the crowd it was the only thing I heard  exhilaration

It wasn't the end though  both myself and the other competitor had missed the next height   received second in the competition shake the victors hand  still proud  still exhilaration  I went to state ranked fourth   pride was surging   it was going to be a good week

when will that be?

When will it be when I can be free
When I will be treated the way a man can be
When will I be respected
When will I be expected in the kitchen
When will women stand up for their children

When will all women be treated the same as men in my small poem I tried to show how women were oppressed during this time but things where slowly getting better.

Behind The Wheel

What time is it?

10:25am
I’m nervous.
I’m sweating.
I hate this feeling in my stomach.

Kentucky Department of Motor Vehicles

Slowly walking to the counter.
Did I remember everything?
She asks for identification.

10:30am

I sit there with my thoughts.
My mind is racing.
Quickly trying to recall all I have learned.
Don’t forget to put on your seatbelt.
Don’t forget your turn signals.
Don’t forget… don’t forget.
I’ve got to calm down.
Palms are sweaty.
I can’t wait until this is over.
Why am I so nervous?

10:45am

“Kristen Korfhage. Please follow me.”
Oh gosh. It’s time.
Silent prayer.
My heart is racing.
I follow the stranger to the car.
He doesn’t seem very friendly.
Just my luck.
Slowly opening the car door.
Get in.
Fasten seatbelt.
Adjust rearview mirror.
He’s filling out some paperwork.

Waiting.
Waiting.
Waiting.

“Okay. Whenever you are ready.”

10:55am

Out of Park.
Into Drive.
My heart is still racing.
I recall the first obstacle.

Parallel Parking.

My worst fear.
Those yellow barrels are staring at me.
Pull past second one.
Reverse.
Okay now I start turning the wheel to my right.
He’s watching my every movement.
Straighten up.
Park.
“Okay, now continue on.”
He writes something on his paper.
Phew that part is over with.

I pull up to a stop sign.
Oh I almost forgot!
Check my rearview mirror.
Keep going.

Turn About.

This one should be cake.
Yet my heart is still racing.
Palms still sweaty.
Pull in.
Reverse.
Turning wheel to my left.
Straighten up.
Park.
“Alright now follow the arrows back.”
He writes again on his paper.

Is it over?
Is that all?

11:10am

Drive back to where I started.
Park.
He’s writing.

Waiting.
Waiting.
Waiting.

“Alright you passed.”
The weight is lifted off my shoulders.
Relief.
He hands me a paper.
Gives me my next steps.
I’m too excited to really listen.
Pinch me I’m dreaming.

11:15am

I know hold in my hands my next step in growing up.
A smile stretched across my face.
What was I so nervous about?
11:17am

Licensed Driver.

Summary: This is a Camera Eye about the time I took my drivers test and all the thoughts that were going through my head. It was a very important moment in my life because it was something I had been looking forward to for years. After I passed my test I finally felt like I was growing up and I had more freedom than ever before.

I Just Ride

I used to believe in the country America.
The person I want to become,
I believe in.
The freedom of the open road,
I believe in.
The kindness of strangers,
I believe in.
I ride.
I just ride when I am at war with myself.
You are who?
Your darkest fantasies,
are you in touch with?
Have you experienced them,
where you're free to create a life for yourself.
Have I?
Am I crazy?
Am I free?

Who are you? Are you in touch with all your darkest fantasies?
Have you created a life for yourself where you’re free to experience them?
I Have.

photo blog

In this photo I believe that the photographer was trying to depict the every day life of people in Omaha. In the photo you can see a trolley driver and above him is a sign that says that they have employed 700 people to work in that area. So I believe that he saw this as a good thing to show the world. For one it has on man at work and most likely there are people on that trolley to get to work. Seconded it showed that there were people working by the sign telling us so, in which is also doing that even thought times were difficult things were going to get better. I believe that is what he was trying to portray when he took that photograph.

The "Common" Man

This is a casual photo of two men waiting outside of the unemployment office. It caught my eye because the two men almost look identical in the way they are standing and the expressions on their face. I noticed in the background the sign for a liquor store. I find it interesting that in a time of economic dismay there is still a liquor store that is open and running. Obviously the liquor sales weren’t greatly affected by the economy. Another little detail I noticed was the lunch sack in one of the men’s arms. I assume this would be his lunch and because they cannot afford to miss a chance to get some money he brought it with him so he wouldn’t have to leave his spot in line. The lighting in the photo leads me to believe this is during the day and probably early in the morning because it seems pretty bright. The men are also wearing coats so I assume it is cool outside and not during the summer. Just by looking at these men’s faces I can easily pick out the mood of the photograph. It seems to be a depressing, yet frustrating, situation that they are taking place in. They both have very broad frowns on their faces so it appears they are aggravated and tired. This makes sense because of the economic situation at the time of this photograph. I decided to choose the theme “Common” Man because at that time it was the common thing to do to stand in line at the unemployment office in hopes of receiving financial assistance until they finally retrieve a job. I believe the photographer, John Vachon, was attempting to show us the true struggles and inconveniences everyday people had to go through just to hopefully get a small check to help them get by.

The Helpless Beggar

This is a very interesting photograph of a blind beggar on the side of the street. I really like this image because it is very contradicting in the sense it is a poor person standing in front of store selling what looks to be radios. Also, men can be seen in the background walking away as if they walked right past the beggar. This picture really depicts the theme of how people during the depression were very desperate, and in a sense were beggars. You can really see this persons sorrow in the picture: their hat is covering their face and they are looking down. It seems as though this person hasn’t received much help from people walking by, and they look to be very emotional about it. I think people during this time and era were very selfish, yet they almost had to me. The depression forced them to focus only on themselves, their family, and job. The beggar on the side of the street received zero attention and was invisible to most. Some other information I depicted from this photo was this beggar had probably been sitting their the entire day depending on the time of day. The stool is a symbol of this person waiting for help, and feeling lost with a sense of no direction in life. I think this person felt like there was nothing else they could do during this time but beg for help from people on the street, but obviously this person has received zero help.  In regards to the texture and physicality of this photo I enjoy the full focus on the beggar and the blur of all people and objects around. This technique sincerely puts all the contextual focus on the beggar and their essential story of helplessness. The black and white only adds to the sorrow in the photo, and having no color in any art really depicts a sense of blankness. I really enjoyed this photo, and it was one of the only ones really having any effect on me.
